Almina Esen, 2024-2025 Spring Semester

During the peer observation process, I actively contributed by providing constructive and detailed feedback on my colleagues’ lessons. I particularly emphasized the significance of incorporating warm-up activities at the beginning of the class to help students recall previous material and mentally prepare for new content. I believe that such straightforward, yet effective practices enhance student engagement and motivation considerably. Furthermore, I offered suggestions aimed at transforming some teacher-centered lessons into more student-centered sessions by recommending strategies such as group work to increase student participation and the use of guiding questions to foster interaction.

This process was mutually beneficial, contributing not only to my colleagues’ professional growth but also to my own development as an educator. Observing diverse teaching materials, classroom management approaches, and effective time management techniques enabled me to reflect critically and integrate new strategies into my own practice. Unlike summative evaluations, peer observation provided an objective framework for comparison and reciprocal learning. I firmly believe that continuous professional development thrives through such collaborative and reflective practices, which are essential for both individual and institutional advancement.

I consider the peer observation process to be a valuable opportunity to identify and incorporate new teaching strategies that I had not previously implemented or been aware of in my own lessons. Through my observations and the constructive feedback received, I became aware that, in certain lessons, I presented an excessive amount of information within a limited timeframe, which negatively impacted student focus and engagement. This insight highlighted the necessity of managing lesson pacing more effectively. Furthermore, particularly in reading classes, I learned that it is beneficial for students to first read or skim the text independently before engaging with audio materials. Given the demanding pace and routine nature of teaching, such nuances can occasionally be overlooked; however, the reflective feedback obtained through peer observation has enabled me to continuously refine my instructional practices. Consequently, I believe I have succeeded in fostering a more engaging and coherent learning environment for my students, both on an individual level and in my professional capacity as an educator.

Peer observation can be considered to be one of the essential and beneficial practices in ELT. The way it is applied in Medipol Language School fosters mutual benefit between the peers. The instructors who take part in the process exchange ideas regarding each other’s teaching and this exercise contributes to the professional development of both the observee and the observer.

Peer observation process gave me the opportunity to improve myself in the sense that I had the chance not only to realize my weaknesses but also to reinforce my strengths. Although you have  enough experience to be aware of your mistakes, you may not correct them on your own. The tips another teacher gives you on your class enable you to see yourself from a different perspective, thus providing new and/or useful insights into the way you teach language.

From my point of view, the best aspect of the peer observation process is that colleagues observe each other in a friendly manner and make their comments frankly due to the fact that there is no superior-subordinate relationship between them. It is an invaluable experience in instructors’ careers as it enhances the quality of their teaching.

The peer observation process offered a great experience that allowed my partner to reevaluate and improve her teaching practice. My most significant contribution during this process was providing constructive feedback on the lesson I observed. In particular, I shared detailed insights about the clear goal setting at the beginning of the lesson, the use of games to enhance student engagement, and the summarization at the end of the lesson. This type of feedback not only helped my colleague improve their lesson planning but also enabled me to develop a more conscious and structured approach in my own teaching.

I can say that the most beneficial aspect of the process for me was the opportunity to directly witness different teaching styles. Observing various classroom management techniques, especially in terms of time management and student-centered instruction, gave me new ideas. Additionally, thanks to the feedback I received from my colleague, I realized that I need to foster more student interaction in my own lessons. This process helped me understand the benefits of a collaborative and continuously developing approach to teaching. Overall, peer observation contributed to my professional development and added flexibility and variety to my teaching practice.

During the peer observation process, I focused on providing specific and detailed feedback to support my colleagues’ teaching practices and strategies. I drew on techniques such as clear explanations aligned with the lesson objectives, engaging activity suggestions, and purposeful questioning. I also offered various methods to encourage equal student participation in class. These suggestions not only contributed to my colleagues’ instructional planning but also encouraged me to take a step back and reflect on my own teaching, motivating me to try new approaches. Observing others’ lessons gave me fresh perspectives and ideas that I could implement in my own classroom. The most beneficial aspect of this process was the collaborative environment it fostered, one that encouraged open communication and mutual learning. In particular, witnessing how experienced instructors managed their classrooms and addressed student needs was truly inspiring and insightful for my own professional growth.

Burcu Piri, 2024-2025 Autumn Semester

Participating in the peer observation process was a valuable experience that allowed me to reflect on my teaching methods and improve my instructional strategies. One of my key contributions was providing constructive feedback to my colleague on lesson structure and student engagement. I highlighted strengths, such as effective questioning techniques, while also suggesting improvements in pacing and classroom interaction. This process not only helped my colleague but also made me more aware of my own teaching practices. Observing another instructor reinforced the importance of clear instructions and active learning strategies, which I have since incorporated into my lessons.

The most beneficial aspect of the peer observation process was gaining a fresh perspective on teaching styles and classroom management. Seeing different approaches to explaining complex topics and handling student participation inspired me to diversify my own techniques. Additionally, receiving feedback on my lesson helped me recognize areas for growth, such as incorporating more student-centred activities. This experience enhanced my professional development by fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.

Overall, peer observation has been an enriching process that has strengthened both my teaching skills and my ability to provide meaningful feedback to colleagues.

The peer observation process requires the exchange of information with colleagues, which enables me to offer feedback on my peer’s teaching strategies, such as student engagement and class management. This also helps me see my own methods from another perspective and change several aspects of my lesson process.

The most explicit benefit of peer observations is experiencing different teaching methods from our colleagues and having the opportunity to apply similar approaches in our own classes. Additionally, unlike summative observations, peer observation is conducted more naturally, and this provides me, as an observee, with a better understanding of my own performance.

In the peer observation process, I played an active role by offering comprehensive and constructive feedback to my colleagues. This feedback emphasized their strengths and pointed out areas where they could improve, fostering a supportive and continuous learning environment. Additionally, I introduced innovative teaching methods, such as the use of multimedia and interactive activities, which led to engaging discussions among my peers. These contributions significantly influenced my teaching. Reflecting on the feedback I received and observing various teaching methods, I refined my strategies. Incorporating new ideas, like multimedia-enhanced lessons, resulted in greater student engagement and better learning outcomes.

The most valuable aspect of the peer observation process for my teaching and professional growth was the opportunity for self-reflection. Watching others teach and receiving feedback prompted me to critically analyze my own practices. This introspection helped me identify areas for improvement and reaffirmed effective strategies I was already using. Engaging in these reflective practices has cultivated a mindset of continuous improvement, ultimately enhancing my teaching effectiveness and contributing to my professional development.

Peer observation, a valuable tool in teacher development, offers numerous benefits. It fosters a collaborative environment where teachers can learn from each other’s strengths and identify areas for improvement. Observing experienced colleagues can expose teachers to new pedagogical approaches, classroom management techniques, and assessment strategies. It also provides an opportunity for self-reflection, as teachers can analyse their own practices in light of what they’ve observed.

During peer observations, I focused on providing specific, actionable feedback. I highlighted effective teaching strategies, such as clear explanations, engaging activities, and effective use of questioning. I also offered suggestions for improvement, focusing on areas like pacing, differentiation, and student engagement. My contributions aimed to support my colleagues’ growth and ultimately enhance the learning experience for our students.

These contributions impacted my peers’ teaching by providing actionable insights for refinement. The feedback fostered reflection and encouraged them to experiment with new approaches. Additionally, the peer observation process facilitated a collaborative environment where we collectively learned and grew as educators.
Peer observation fosters a collaborative environment for teacher development. It allows educators to gain diverse perspectives, refine instructional practices, receive constructive feedback and build professional relationships.

The most beneficial aspect of peer observation is the opportunity for self-reflection and growth. By observing others, teachers gain insights into their own teaching practices, identify areas for improvement, and refine their pedagogical approaches to better meet the needs of their students.
